ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- Senior Naomi Cass (Westport, Mass.) placed ninth out of a field of 192 runners to lead the Bridgewater State University women's cross country team on Saturday morning at the season opening Suffolk Short Course Classic held at the Mark Coogan Cross Country Course in Attleboro, Massachusetts.
The Bears placed 12th overall in the team standings. The top three teams in the standings were all Division I programs as Northeastern University captured the team title followed by the University of New Hampshire in second place and the University of the Holy Cross in third.
Cass covered the three-kilometer course in a time of 11:13.94 as she was the top Division III harrier at the meet. Sophomore Ruth White of Division I UNH checked in with the winning time of 10:59.42.
Sophomore Rhiannon Vos (Marstons Mills, Mass.) was the next Bear to cross the line as she posted a time of 12:07.39 to finish 42nd overall.
Sophomore Olivia Downin (Hudson, Mass.), freshmen Olivia Pendleton (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) and Cheyanne Kelley (Wrentham, Mass.), and graduate student Lisa Jaeger (Halle, Germany) capped off Bridgewater's six runners at the meet. Downin recorded a time of 12:52.10 to place 82nd, while Pendleton finished with a time of 12:57.12 to finish 86th at the meet. Kelley checked in at 144th overall as she crossed the line in 14:13.66. Jaeger finished 150th with a mark of 14:39.47.
Pendleton and Kelley were both making their collegiate debuts.
The BSU women's cross country team is off until Saturday, September 20th when the Bears compete at the 52nd Annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
