Women's Tennis Falls to RIC in Completion of Suspended Match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, R.I.) posted a 6-4 decision in the third and deciding set of the fifth flight singles match to give the Rhode Island College women's tennis team a 5-4 victory over Little East Conference rival Bridgewater State University in the completion of a suspended match on Monday afternoon.

With the win, RIC (13-1, 7-1 LEC) earns the second seed and a first round bye in the Little East Tournamernt which gets underway on Tuesday.  Bridgewater (8-3, 6-2 LEC) is seeded third and will host #6 Worcester State University in first round play tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. 

The match, which was originally played last Wednesday, was halted due to darkness with the host Anchorwomen leading 4-4 with just the fifth singles flight needing to be finished.

Cannata and and BSU senior Rachel Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) had split the first two sets at #5, 6-4, 3-6, with Cannata leading 3-2 in the third set when the match was stopped.

The Bears led 2-1 after doubles play.  Senior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman Alisha Silva (East Taunton, Mass.) recorded an 8-1 win at the first flight, while Eramo and freshman Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) posted an 8-2 triumph at number three.

RIC junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) and sophomore partner Julie Reddy (Smithfield, R.I.) notched the lone doubles point for the Anchorwomen with an 8-3 decision at the second flight.

In singles play, Campanella, freshman Kim Daigle (Sterling, Mass.) and Reddy tallied straight set wins for the Anchorwomen at the first, second and fourth flights, respectively.

Silva battled back from set down to post a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at number three singles for the Bears, while freshman Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) also won in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at the sixth flight.
