Women's Soccer Falls to UMass Boston, 4-1

BOSTON, Mass. -- The UMass Boston women's soccer team posted a 4-1 non-conference victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at James Cotter Field.

The Beacons improve to 17-2 on the season with their 14th straight win. The Bears fall to 10-7 as their five-game winning streak came to an end.

UMass received first half goals from sophomores Grace Oliver (Rockland, Mass.), Allie Crawford (Kingston, Mass.) and Morgan Palma (Halifax, Mass.) as the Beacons led 3-1 at the break.

Senior forward Amelia Burke (Plymouth, Mass.) scored for the Bears in the opening stanza with freshman midfielder Kelly Powers (Stoneham, Mass.) picking up the assist. Burke buried a shot into the top-right corner of the net from just inside the 18.

Sophomore midfielder Mary Jo Murphy (Worcester, Mass.), who assisted on Palma's goal, provided an insurance marker for the Beacons in the 80th minute to round out the scoring.

Bridgewater State's best scoring chance in the second half came off of the foot of senior forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.). Vincent unloaded a rocket from about 25 yards out that slammed off the goal post.

UMass held a 20-7 shot advantage for the game. The Corsairs also attempted the only two corner kicks of the contest.

Freshman goalkeeper Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.) made three saves to record her 16th win of the season between the pipes for the Beacons. Spylios played into the 85th minute before giving way to senior Miranda Smith (Runnemede, N.J.).

BSU senior netminder Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) turned aside six shots in the setback.

The Beacons are now 7-2-1 all-time against Bridgewater Sate.

Both teams wrap up regular season play on Saturday afternoon. The Bears travel to Worcester State University for a noontime MASCAC game with the Lancers, while the Beacons head to Western Connecticut State University to take on the Colonials in a Little East Conference matchup at two.
