BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Former Bridgewater State University standout wrestler Wilson Gomes will be competing at the 2025 African Wrestling Championships.
The event will take place in Casablanca, Morocco on May 3rd and May 4th at the King Mohammed V Sports Complex.
Gomes, who will represent Cape Verde, is competing out of the 65 kilogram (143 pounds) weight class in the senior freestyle category.
Gomes is a 2023 graduate of Bridgewater State where he earned a degree in criminal justice. He competed on the BSU wrestling team for four seasons and produced an overall record of 83-54 (.702) with 42 pins, 153 takedowns, 251 near fall points, 40 reversals and 147 escapes. He ranks third all-time in program history in pins and 11th in wins.
As a senior in 2022-2023, Gomes posted a record of 31-8 (.795) competing mostly out of the 133-pound weight class with 19 pins to go along with 52 takedowns, 114 near fall points, 13 reversals and 36 escapes. He paced fourth at the Northeast Regional to earn All-Northeast Region honors for the second straight season and earned All-New England Wrestling Association honorable mention honors.
