BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Follow the progress of Bridgewater State University graduate student Kevin McBirney, senior Kiara Abrantes and sophomore Grace Inacio as the trio will be competing at the 2026 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
McBirney qualified in the 800-meter run, Abrantes in the 400-meter dash and Inacio in the 200-meter dash.
The national championship meet will be held on Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
McBirney, who hails from East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, is seeded fifth (tie) in the 800. McBirney recorded his qualifying time of 1:50.41 (converted from 1:51.98 for track size) on March 7th at the Tufts Final Qualifier.
A native of Somerset, Massachusetts, Abrantes is seeded fifth in the 400. Abrantes posted her qualifying time of 55.24 seconds on March 1st at the Division III New England Championships held at The Track at New Balance.
Inacio is seeded 12th (tie) in the 200. The Taunton, Massachusetts product posted her qualifying time of 24.53 seconds (converted from 24.91 for track size) on March 7th at the Tufts Final Qualifier.
McBirney is making his second straight appearance at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as he finished 16th a year ago in the 800 with a time of 1:56.02 at the Golisano Training Center in Rochester, New York.
Abrantes is making her third straight appearance (two indoor, one outdoor) at a national track & field championship meet competing in the 400. She finished 15th in the 400 (56.96) a year ago at the indoor championships in Rochester, and was 16th in the 400 (55.98) at the 2025 outdoor championships held at the the Spire Institute & Academy in Geneva, Ohio.
Abrantes and Inacio were part of the Bears' First Team All-American 4x100-meter relay squad at the 2025 outdoor championships. The quartet, which also included former Bears Alison McDonough and Jailene Escalera, posted a school-record preliminary time of 46.30 seconds and placed sixth in the finals with a time of 46.33. It marked the first time that BSU sent a women's relay team to the NCAAs.
The preliminary race of the women's 400-meter dash is slated to take place on Friday afternoon at 4:05 PM (EDT) with the finals scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 5:25 PM (EDT).
The preliminary race of the women's 200-meter dash is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 5:15 PM (EDT) with the finals slated for Saturday evening at 6:15 PM (EDT).
On the men's side, the preliminary race of the 800-meter is set for Friday afternoon at 5:00 PM (EDT) with the finals on Saturday evening at 6:00 PM (EDT).
For each women’s individual event contested, including the pentathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the championships.
