Men's Outdoor Track & Field Captures Corsair Classic Title

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men’s outdoor track and field team scored 130 points to capture the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic title on Saturday.

Five individual event victories were captured, with Brian Espinosa (Rehoboth, Mass) leading the way by winning two. Espinosa captured the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.47 seconds, as well as the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 3.50 inches (6.49 meters).

Stephen Wahome (Lowell, Mass), Daniel Coulter (Norton, Mass), and Stephan Cawley (Dedham, Mass) captured the other three titles. Wahome won the 10,000-meter run and qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 31:46.16. Coulter won the 110-meter hurdles and also qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 15.57 seconds. Cawley won the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, three inches (15.01 meters) and placed third in the discus with a BSU school-record toss of 149 feet, nine inches (44.73 meters).  He broke the Bears’ 27-year-old record of 145 feet, one inch, set by Mike Cleaves in 1986.

Joshua Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass) placed in three events, taking fourth in both the 100-meter dash and 200 meters, and eighth in the triple jump. Danner-Hicks ran a 11.40 in the 100, qualifying for the Division III New England Championships, and a 23.31 in the 200.  He added a jump of 19 feet, 2.50 inches (5.85 meters). Michael McPherson (Mansfield, Mass) placed in both the shot put and the hammer-throw events. McPherson posted distance of 48 feet, 8.25 inches (14.84 meters) to finish second in the shot, and 142 feet, three inches (43.36 meters) to place third in the in the hammer.  He qualified for the ECAC Championships in the shot put.

Connor Foley (Foxborough, Mass) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeple chase with a time of 10:30.36.  Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass) finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.88, while Kevin Sawyer (Woburn, Mass) recorded a fourth place showing in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.94 seconds.

The 4x400 team of Sawyer, Andrew Corley (Milton, Mass), Christopher Naughton (Braintree, Mass), and Ian Knapton (Mattapoisett, Mass) finished third in the relay event with a time of 3:30.80.

Christian Lavoie (Marion, Mass) qualified for the Division III New England Championships in the discus with a toss of 134 feet, eight inches (41.06 meters).

The Bears will head to Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday, to compete at the Eastern Invitational. The meet will get underway at 3:00 pm.
