Men's Tennis Falls to Wheaton, 4-3

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team was edged by Wheaton College, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon.

In their first meeting since 2015, the Lyons (6-2) won the first three singles and the first two doubles against the Bears (1-2) at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

Wheaton, which is on a four-match winning streak, has defeated BSU nine straight times since 2008.

Winning singles matches for the Bears were sophomore Khiem Nguyen (Burlington, Vt.), junior Anthony Lucas (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior Ryan Hebert (Taunton, Mass.) while the doubles team of junior Tom Ayson (Plymouth, Mass.) and Lucas also won.

Nguyen prevailed at No. 4 singles over junior Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland), 6-3, 6-3, while Lucas defeated sophomore David Anghinetti (Rehoboth, Mass.), 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 10-8, at No. 5 singles and Hebert was a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-7 winner over freshman Sean Caldwell (Winchester, Mass.) at No. 6 singles.

Ayson and Lucas stopped Anghinetti and Caldwell, 6-3.

Wheaton sophomore Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) took No. 1 singles over freshman Will Horton (Lakeville, Mass.), 6-2, 7-5, while junior Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) won at No. 2 singles for the Lyons over senior Adam Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.), 6-2, 6-2.

Junior Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Ayson at No. 3 singles.

Wheaton held a 4-1 lead before Lucas and Hebert won their matches.

BSU opens the Little East Conference schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts the University of Southern Maine.

Wheaton faces Springfield on Saturday at noon.
