Men's Soccer Blanked by Wheaton
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) notched a hat trick to lead the visiting Wheaton College men’s soccer team to a 3-0 shutout victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) notched a hat trick to lead the visiting Wheaton College men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.
Sophomore forward Luke Strange (Portland, Ore.) added a pair of assists for the Lyons (9-3) who received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division III Poll. The host Bears fall to 4-8 with the setback. Wheaton is now 22-3 all-time versus the Bears as the two teams first met in 1992.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lukas Ekmanis (Baxter, Tenn.) put together a solid effort in between the pipes for Bridgewater State as he made a career-high 14 saves including a number of outstanding diving stops to keep the score close.
Lloyd opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as he converted off a corner kick. Strange sent the corner attempt to the top of the six and Lloyd launched a diving header inside the left post.
Lloyd potted a pair of goals in the 57th minute to complete the hat trick. Off a throw in from freshman midfielder Ethan Fain (East Greenwich, Conn.), senior midfielder Trot Mattos (Somerset, Mass.) sent a long volley into the box that evaded the leaping BSU goalkeeper. Lloyd knocked the ball into the wide open net with a sliding shot to make it a 2-0 game. Just 36 seconds later, Lloyd redirected a crossing pass from senior defender Billy Conte (Washington, D.C.) with Strange picking up the secondary assist.
Wheaton finished with a decided 32-6 shot advantage for the game. The Lyons also took all 18 corner kick attempts.
Junior goalkeeper Cameron Millington (Fairfield, Conn.) was forced to make just one save as he recorded his second win and first shutout of the season.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday morning when they travel to Westfield State University for an 11 o'clock Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup with the Owls. The Lyons entertain New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival MIT on Saturday afternoon at two.
