Samantha Souza Named MASCAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the third time this season, Bridgewater State University sophomore forward Samantha Souza has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.

Souza scored three goals as she found the back of the net in all three games in a 2-1 week for the Bears which included a pair of MASCAC wins over Framingham State and Worcester State. The Dartmouth, Massachusetts product potted the game-winning goal and set the school single-season goal mark in a dramatic 5-4 overtime victory over the Lancers as the Bears rallied from a 4-1 fourth quarter deficit.

Through 19 games this season, Souza has recorded 33 goals and seven assists for 73 points, all career highs. She currently leads the MASCAC in both goals and scoring, ranks second in game-winning goals (6) and is tied for seventh in assists.

On a national level, Souza presently ranks third in all of Division III in both goals (1.74 GPG) and scoring (3.84 PPG).

Souza eclipsed BSU Hall of Famer Shelby Farland's single-season program mark of 32 goals set in 2012. She is four points shy of Farland's single-season scoring mark of 77 points also set in 2012.

In 38 games (all starts) over her first two seasons with the Bears, Souza has amassed 45 goals and nine assists for 99 points. Nine of her 45 goals have been game-winners.

Souza ranks fifth all-time at Bridgewater State in both goals and scoring.

The MASCAC Player of the Week selection marks the fourth of Souza's career.

The BSU field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 15-4 including a 10-2 mark in the MASCAC standings. The Bears are seeded second in this week's MASCAC Tournament and will host a semifinal round game on Thursday night at seven o'clock.
