14 Field Hockey Student-Athletes Named to NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Fourteen members of the Bridgewater State University field hockey team have been named to the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad.

The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.

Midfielders Megan Cullinane (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) along with forward Beth Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) are the three seniors from the 2012 squad who achieved all-academic status.

Members of the junior class on the all-academic team are forwards Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) and Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.), while forward Emma Delaney (Townsend, Mass.) and defender Rachel Robinson (Hardwick, Mass.) represent the Bears' sophomore class.

All-academic BSU freshmen class include forward Rebecca Dunlop (Gloucester, Mass.), midfielders Jennifer Arnold (West Yarmouth, Mass.), Brittney Field (Hubbardston, Mass.), Emily Mosca (Dedham, Mass.) and Mary Roche (Arlington, Mass.), defender Molly Bennett (Ashland, Mass.) and goaltender Morganne Lundin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).

Lundin and Mosca were also recognized as NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction. The honor is bestowed to outstanding student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-2013 academic year.

The 2012 BSU field hockey squad was also one of 125 teams to garner the NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award for having a team GPA of 3.00 or higher.

The Bear posted a record of 18-4 during the 2012 season including a 10-1 mark in Little East Conference (LEC) play.  The team set program single-season marks for wins, goals (82), assists (52) and points (216).  They also ranked 11th in all of Division III in winning percentage (.818), 14th in goals, 15th in assists and 16th in points.  Seeded second at the LEC Tournament, the Bears posted a 3-0 opening round victory over #7 University of Southern Maine, before dropping 4-3 decision to third-seeded Keene State College in the semifinals.  BSU also competed in the ECAC Division III New England Tournament as the number one seed, falling in the championship game to Plymouth State University, 4-3, in overtime.
