BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second time this season, Bridgewater State University sophomore middle hitter Lily Welch has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.
The MASCAC Tournament MVP, Welch averaged 12.5 kills and recorded a .351 hitting percentage during the Bears MASCAC title run. The Hanso, Massachusetts native also averaged 16.5 digs and five blocks while recording 42 receptions with just two receiving errors.
Welch notched 12 kills, 13 digs, six assisted blocks and an ace in a 3-0 semifinal round win over Framingham State; and tallied 13 kills, 20 digs and four blocks (two solo) in a 3-2 come-from-behind championship match victory on the road over Westfield State.
Through 22 matches this season, Welch has amassed 201 kills, 23 aces, 371 receptions, 244 digs and 51 blocks (12 solo). She presently ranks fourth among the MASCAC leaders in hitting percentage (.247), sixth in kills per set (2.54) and blocks, and eight in total kills.
In 39 matches over her first two seasons with the Bears, Welch has produced 317 kills, 29 aces, 435 receptions, 300 digs and 76 blocks (24 solo).
The MASCAC weekly honor marks the second of Welch's career.
The BSU volleball team is currently 13-9 on the season. The Bears will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament later this week for the first time since 2008 and 11th time in program history. Tournament pairings will be announced later this afternoon.
