BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Rhode Island College women's tennis team earned at least a share of the Little East Conference regular season title as the visiting Anchorwomen downed Bridgewater State University, 5-4, on Friday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
RIC improves to 11-2 on the season and remains unbeaten in conference play with a 7-0 Little East mark. Bridgewater State slips to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the LEC.
The regular season concludes for both teams on Saturday afternoon at one. The Anchorwomen host Salem State University, while the Bears entertain the University of Southern Maine. Both teams are locked into the top two seeds for next week's Little East Tournament.
In a match that originally started on October 1st (called due to rain), the Anchorwomen captured two of three doubles flights and four of six doubles matches to record the win.
In doubles play, sophomore Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) and junior Julie Reddy (Smithfield, R.I.) posted an 8-2 victory at number one, while senior Sadie Campanelli (Chepachet, R.I.) and junior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, R.I.) garnered an 8-5 decision at the second flight.
BSU's third flight tandem of sophomores Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) earned an 8-3 victory for the Bears' lone doubles point. Scagnelli and Roman improved to 7-0 in doubles play against Little East competition.
Roman evened the score at two-apiece with a 6-0, 6-1 straight set triumph at number six singles.
The Anchorwomen, however, received straight set singles wins from Reilly at the first flight (6-2, 6-1), senior Tressa Cannata (Cranston,R.I.) at number four (6-0, 6-3) and Campanelli at the second spot (6-3, 6-2) to secure the team victory.
BSU freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) battled back from a set down to post a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph at third singles, while sophomore Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) also rebounded from a first set setback to register a 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7 decision at number five.
Roman and Anderson are both 7-0 in Little East singles play, while Scagnelli improved to 6-1.
