Wrestling Drops Pair of Matches at NYU Tri

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team dropped a pair of matches to nationally ranked opponents on Saturday.

The Bears were defeated by the Coast Guard Academy, 39-6, in the morning and then lost to host New York University, 47-10, in the afternoon at the John A. Paulson Center.

NYU improved to 21-3 and is ranked 15th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll while Coast Guard is 17th in the nation.

The Bears (1-7) won just four of the 20 matches against Coast Guard and NYU with freshman Ethan Buonanducci (Enfield, Conn.) going 2-0 and junior captain Christian Curley (Bridgewater, Mass.) plus sophomore Jack Sullivan (Natick, Mass.) had one win apiece.

At 133 pounds, Buonanducci won by sudden victory-1, 7-0, over Coast Guard senior Owen Woolcott (State College, Pa.).

In the match against NYU, Buonanducci was a winner by forfeit to record six of the Bears' 16 team points on the day.

Curley, at 197 pounds, also was a sudden victory-1 winner over Coast Guard senior Kevin Pandorf (Elmer, N.J.), 4-1.

Against NYU, Curley lost by technical fall, 19-4, at 4:13 to sophomore Mo Talebi (Beverly Hills, Calif.).

Sullivan scored his win at 141 pounds over NYU Matt D'Arcy (Manasquan, N.J.) by a 12-4 major decision.

Sullivan lost his match to Coast Guard junior Robert Rerras (Herndon, Va.) by technical fall, 18-1, at 5:10.

Scoring wins for Coast Guard were freshman Kekoa Madayag (Rahnert Park, Calif.) at 125 pounds over BSU senior Sei Dolomengi (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) by fall at 4:52; sophomore Nicholas Sanders (Fredericksburg, Va.) by a 7-2 decision over Bears freshman Kamel Dib (Lincoln, R.I.); and senior Mike Edwards (Glenpool, Okla.) at 157 pounds by a 13-6 decision over BSU freshman Avery Carl (Bridport, Vt.).

At 165 pounds, Coast Guard junior Joey Miranda (South Harrison, N.J.) won by technical fall, 18-3, at 7:00 over BSU junior Cqari Bacote (Springfield, Mass.); Coast Guard senior Thomas Rhodes (Forest Park, Wash.) won by technical fall, 19-4, at 4:57 over BSU sophomore James Calabrese (Foxborough, Mass.) at 174 pounds; freshman Chase Mayes (Nolensville, Tenn.) won at 184 pounds for Coast Guard over Bears freshman Mohaned Said (Gloucester, Mass.) by fall at 52 seconds; and heavyweight Carl DiGiorgio (Doylestown, Pa.), a Coast Guard senior, won by technical fall, 19-4 at 2:24, over Bears junior Michael Mastroianni (Milford, Mass.).

In the match with NYU, Dolomengi was stopped by fall at 1:51 by sophomore Xavier Diaz (Richboro, Pa.) at 125; Dib lost by fall at 1:36 to junior John Mairano (Simsbury, Conn.); Carl was defeated by fall at 22 seconds by sophomore Alex Kaufmann (Pittsburgh, Pa.); while BSU junior Kaleb Rhoton (North Andover, Mass.) lost by fall at 59 seconds to graduate student Justin Mayes (Bellevue, Ohio).

Nick Bell (Greenwich, Conn.), a junior at NYU, won twice, defeating Bacote by fall at 2:38 at 165 pounds and by fall at 1:59 over Calabrese at 174.

Also winning by fall at 1:25 was heavyweight Nathan Faxon (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) over Mastroianni.

BSU will have one more tri-match on Friday night in Rhode Island.

The Bears face Trinity College at 6:30 p.m. and take on host Rhode Island College at 8 p.m.

Two days after that, BSU will travel to Connecticut for the NEWA Futures Tournament that is being hosted by Coast Guard.
