Women's Lacrosse Cruises to 15-3 NEWLA Win over Becker

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Eleven different players scored for the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team as the host Bears downed New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) foe Becker College, 15-3, on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

Bridgewater improves to 5-6 on the season with the win and remains unbeaten in the NEWLA with a 3-0 league record.  Becker falls to 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the Alliance.

Sophomore attack Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) paced the Bears with three goals and an assist.  Freshman attack Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) added two goals and a pair of helpers, while senior midfielder Stephanie Lannon (Swampscott, Mass.) registered two markers and an assist.

Junior midfielder Michelle Navoni (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) both filled up the stat sheet for the hosts.  Navoni tallied a goal, two assists, three ground balls, five controlled draws a two caused turnovers, while Clancy notched a goal and two assists to go along with two caused turnovers, two ground balls and a game-high six draws.

Juniors Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) and Sammi Salverio (Hanson, Mass.), sophomore Kinsley Willis (Canton, Mass.) and freshmen Samantha Devine (Marshfield, Mass.), Amanda Liebetruth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Melissa Medeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) rounded out the BSU goal scorers.  Salverio, Willis, Devine and Liebetruth also added assists.

Freshman netminder Jessica Polaski (Agawam, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Bears.  Polaski played the first 26:21 and did not allow a goal while turning aside two shots.  Sophomore Victoria Moore (Duxbury, Mass.) and freshman Katelyn Jeski (Dracut, Mass.) finished with two saves apiece in relief. 

Bridgewater dominated play throughout as the Bears outshot the Hawks, 34-10, and held a 14-6 edge in draws as well as a 17-8 advantage in ground balls.  BSU led 11-0 at the intermission and did not give up a goal until the 18:12 mark of the second half.

Senior attack Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, Vt.) scored a pair of second half goals to lead the way for Becker, while freshman goaltender Karena Prescott (New Bedford, Mass.) made ten saves.

Bridgewater is off until next Saturday when the Bears hosts NEWLA rival Worcester State University at noon.  Becker entertains Salem State University in a league game on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30.
