WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team dropped their season-opener to Vassar College, 17-6, on Wednesday in the SpringFling games at Lake Lytal Park.
Eight different Vassar players figured into the scoring column as the Brewers (2-0) scored six straight times in the final 17:30 of the first half to turn a slim 4-3 lead into a 10-4 advantage at the intermission. Marissa Reilly (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored two of her three goals during the run.
Following halftime, Vassar scored five straight goals, two coming from Davis, to build a 15-4 lead midway through the second half.
Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) and Sammi Salverio (Hanson, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with two goals apiece while Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) added a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut.
Offensively, the Brewers dominated the contest with a 31-12 shot advantage, and had three players earn a hat trick, led by Reilly's second straight, one from Dara Davis (Guilford, Conn.) and one from Emma Carter (Pacific Palisades, Calif.). Davis added two assists.
Vassar goalie Katharine Pula (Washington Township, N.J.) earned her second victory of the season behind a five save effort. She allowed four goals before being replaced with 12:10 remaining and the Brewers leading 15-4. Jessica Polaski (Agawam, Mass.) made six saves in the loss for the Bears. Victoria Moore (Duxbury, Mass.) relieved Polaski and played the last 23:25 turning aside four shots.
The Brewers will play their final game on Florida on Friday at 9:00 am against St. John Fisher. Bridgewater State next faces Fredonia State on Friday at 11:30 am.
