Men's Indoor Track & Field Places Fourth at Tufts Stampede

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Led by Michael McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) the Bridgewater State University men's indoor track and field team placed fourth with 63 team points at the Tufts Stampede on Saturday.

McPherson came in first in the shot put with a toss of 54 feet, 5.50 inches collecting 10 points for the Bears. He also gained 8 points with a third place showing in the weight throw with a mark of 50 feet, 9.25 inches. Stephan Cawley (Dedham, Mass) also collected three points for the Bears in the weight throw with a seventh place finish (47'11").  Cawley's throw was good enough to qualify for the Division III New England Championships.

The duo of Andy Sukeforth (Middleboro, Mass) and Josh Goehring (Haverhill, Mass) combined for 11 points in the 800 meters. Sukeforth placed second with a time of 1:57.71. Goehring ran a 1:58.73, good enough for sixth place. They were also in the 4x800 relay, along with Stephen Wahome (Lowell, Mass.) and Dallas O'Brien (Mansfield, Mass.), which finished second and qualified for the ECAC Championships. The foursome ran a time of 8:01.47.

A pair of Bears finished in the top ten in the 60-meter dash. Chinedu Chukwu (Randolph, Mass) placed fourth, gaining five points, with a time of 7.19 seconds. Chukwu also qualified for the Division III New England Championships. Joseph Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass) gained three points, placing sixth with a time of 7.39 seconds.

The rest of the points came in the triple jump and long jump, courtesy of Timothy Judge (East Bridgewater, Mass) and Brian Espinosa (Rehoboth, Mass). Judge placed seventh in the triple jump with a jump of 41 feet, 8 inches, good for two points. Espinosa gained eight points with a second place finish in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 9 inches.

MIT won the men's meet title with 162 points followed by Williams College (85.5 pts.) in second and host Tufts (69 pts.) in third.

The Bears will head off to University of Southern Maine next week for the MASCAC Championships and the New England Alliance Championships.
