BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over non-conference foe Emerson College on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
Bridgewater swept all the three doubles matches and took four out of six singles flights to come away with the victory.
Senior David Campbell (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) led the way for the host Bears as he earned a 6-4, 6-1 straight set triumph at first singles, and teamed with junior Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, Mass.) for an 8-6 decision at the top doubles spot.
Senior Nicholas Amrose (Arlington, Mass.) and freshman Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.) came away with an 8-5 win at second doubles, while freshmen Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Joao Machado (Newton, Mass.) battled to a 9-8 third flight doubles victory that took a 7-4 tie-breaker to decide.
Gotlib and classmate Colin Fontaine (Westfield, Mass.) posted singles wins at the fourth and fifth flights respectively. Farrell went three sets with Emerson sophomore Nate Fuller (Rehoboth, Mass.) at the sixth flight (6-7, 7-6, 10-1) with each of the first two sets ending with a tie-breaker.
Emerson picked up a pair of singles victories from senior Michael Nourie (Philadelphia, Pa.) at the second spot and classmate Garrett Mercer (North Kingstown, R.I.) at number three. Nourie won a tough three-set match over Zagame, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7, while Mercer triumphed in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Bridgewater (3-2) will open Little East Conference play on Saturday at noon as the Bears host UMass Boston. Emerson (0-7) entertains Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Norwich University also on Saturday at noon.
