BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and all six singles flights as the Bears cruised to a 9-0 win over non-conference foe Wheelock College this afternoon in Bridgewater.
The Bears even their 2010 record at 3-3, while Wheelock drops to 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore Juan Ortiz (Asuncion, Paraguay) remains unbeaten in singles play this season as he improved to 5-0 at the top flight with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory. Freshman Matt Mailhot (Oxford, MA), senior Armindo Rocha (Brockton, MA), sophomores Adam Laithy (North Smithfield, RI) and Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, MA) and junior Justin Lipomi (Lowell, MA) also posted singles wins for the Bears.
Mailhot and Zagame teamed for an 8-1 triumph at first doubles, while Laithy and junior Nicholas Amrose (Arlington, MA) recorded an 8-0 win at the second flight. Freshmen Nicholas Desisto (Uxbridge, MA) and Shawn Robinson (Uxbridge, MA) earned an 8-2 victory in their doubles debut at the third spot.
Bridgewater will open Little East Conference play on Tuesday afternoon as the Bears travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 3:30 match with the Corsairs. Wheelock heads to Mitchell College on Tuesday for a New England Collegiate Conference match with the Pequots.
