BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – For the second consecutive week and fifth time in her career, Bridgewater State University senior midfielder Shelby Farland has been selected as the Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.
Farland notched five goals and added a pair of assists for 12 points, including the 100th of her career, to power the Bears to a pair of Little East wins over Westfield State and Worcester State last week.
Farland, who hails from Fiskdale, Massachusetts, scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner in a 3-0 shutout of the Owls as she became just the third player in BSU field hockey history to reach the 100-point milestone. She then torched the Lancers for four goals to go along with an assist in a 6-1 victory at Worcester.
With her nine point performance against the Lancers, Farland set a new career high in scoring as she now has 43 points on the season. She also equaled last year's total of 17 goals and increased her career scoring output to 111 points. She trails Bethany Bush (119 pts) for second place on the Bears' all-time list.
Farland also extended her point-scoring streak to 14 games dating back to last season. Her 14-game streak started back on October 29th of 2011 in a 3-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State.
With Farland leading the way, the Bears have scored 46 goals through the first ten games of the season as they are on pace to eclipse the team single-season goal scoring mark of 60 goals set in 1979.
Farland ranks fifth nationally in all of Division III in scoring, sixth in goals and 12th in assists.
The BSU field hockey team is currently 9-1 on the season and tied for first place in the Little East standings with a 5-0 conference mark. The only other time that a Bridgewater State field hockey team had one loss or less through the first team games of the season was in 1985 when the squad started the year 9-0-1.
In upcoming action, the Bears hit the road to take on LEC rival Framingham State on Tuesday afternoon (4:00) before hosting non-conference foe Anna Maria on Thursday night (7:00). Bridgewater caps off the week with a Saturday home matinee with Little East foe Western Connecticut State at 3:30.
