BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University junior defender Mattie Burke has been named the Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
Burke anchored a Bridgewater State defensive unit that gave up just one goal in a pair of Little East Conference win over Westfield State and Worcester State last week. The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts native and her teammates limited Westfield to just one shot in a 3-0 shutout victory. She also recorded a defensive save in a 6-1 win at Worcester.
Burke has started and played in 29 of the Bears’ 30 games on defense over the last two seasons. She has notched a pair of defensive saves and has helped the Bears record six shutouts, including four this season, to go along with a team 1.81 goals against average.
The BSU field hockey team is currently 9-1 on the season and tied for first place in the Little East standings with a 5-0 conference mark. The only other time that a Bridgewater State field hockey team had one loss or less through the first ten games of the season was in 1985 when the squad started the year 9-0-1.
In upcoming action, the Bears hit the road to take on LEC rival Framingham State on Tuesday afternoon (4:00) before hosting non-conference foe Anna Maria on Thursday night (7:00). Bridgewater caps off the week with a Saturday home matinee with Little East foe Western Connecticut State at 3:30.
