Ryan Flaherty Named MASCAC Baseball Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second straight week and third time this season, Bridgewater State University senior third baseman Ryan Flaherty has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Player of the Week.

A native of Duxbury, Massachusetts, Flaherty garnered MASCAC Tournament MVP honors as he batted .636 (7-11) with two doubles, a home run, a sacrifice fly, four walks, three runs and six RBI in three games during the Bears’ tournament title run. He also posted a .688 on base percentage and a 1.091 slugging percentage.

Flaherty went 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, two runs and two RBI in a 16-6 win over Westfield State; 1-for-4 with a double and a walk in a 7-4 victory over Salem State; and 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, a sacrifice fly, a run and four RBI in a 12-11 improbable championship game triumph over Worcester State. He belted a two-run homer and smacked a walk-off RBI single in a seven-run bottom of the ninth as the Bears’ overcame an 11-5 deficit against the Lancers to capture the tournament title.

Through 38 games this season, Flaherty is batting .366 (52-142) with ten doubles, four home runs, 23 walks, 33 runs and 45 RBI. He also checks in with a .450 on base percentage as well as a .521 slugging percentage.

Flaherty currently leads the MASCAC in RBI and ranks fourth in sacrifice flies (4) as well as fifth in hits and doubles. He is also sixth among the conference leaders in total bases (74) and extra base hits (14), seventh in home runs, eighth in walks, ninth in both batting and slugging percentage, and tenth in runs.

In 125 games over three seasons with the Bears, Flaherty has a career batting average of .339 (159-469) with 30 doubles, 27 home runs, 69 walks, 113 runs and 154 RBI. He also checks in with a career slugging percentage of .576 as well as a .423 on base percentage.

Flaherty is tied for second on the Bears' all-time home run list along with Jay Doherty (1989-92), trailing only John Kiely (29, 1986-87). He is also second all-time in runs batted in and third in extra base hits (57).

The MASCAC Player of the Week accolade marks the fourth of Flaherty's career.

The BSU baseball team is currently 30-8 on the season as the Bears reached the 30-win mark for the fourth time in the last five years and eighth time in program history. By virtue of the MASCAC Tournement title, the Bears advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fifth straight year and 19th time in program history.
