BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior Michael McPherson has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
A native of Mansfield, Massachusetts, McPherson took home top honors in the shot put at the UMass Boston Invitational this past weekend with a school-record toss of 53 feet, 9.25 inches (16.39 meters). He shattered his own previous standard of 50 feet, 11.50 inches (15.53 meters) set last season at the ECAC Division III Championships. McPherson also added a fourth place finish in the weight throw posting a distance of 52 feet, 2.50 inches (15.91 meters).
McPherson qualified for the Division III New England Regionals as well as the ECAC and Open New England Championships in both the shot put and weight throw with his performance at the season-opening meet.
In addition to his indoor shot put record, McPherson also currently holds school outdoor marks in the shot put (55'7.50") and hammer throw (172'2.00"). During the spring 2012 outdoor season, he earned All-America honors in the shot put by placing eighth at the NCAA Division III Championships in Claremont, California.
The indoor season continues for McPherson and the BSU men's track and field team on Saturday as the Bears will compete at the Harvard Open.
