Brian Espinosa Named MASCAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University sophomore Brian Espinosa has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Espinosa earned pair of All-New England honors to lead the Bears to a fifth place finish at the Division III New England Championships held at Bates College this past weekend.  The Rehoboth, Massachusetts native captured the individual title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.63 seconds.  He also finished second and broke his own school record in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, nine inches (6.93 meters), eclipsing his previous mark of 22 feet, 4.5 inches set earlier this season.

The fifth place finish in the team standings for the Bears tied for the best showing by a MASCAC indoor team at the New England Division III Championships since Fitchburg State placed third in 1989.

Along with his BSU indoor long jump mark, Espinosa was also a part of the Bears' record-setting 4x200 relay team which set the school standard with a time of 1:31.68 earlier this season at the Wheaton Invitational.

Next weekend, Espinosa and his teammates will compete at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championships hosted by Boston University.  He is expected to compete in both the 200 and long jump events.

Espinosa, who ranks 26th in all of Division III in the long jump, has also qualified for the ECAC Championships in both the long jump and 200.  The ECACs will take place at the New Balance Armory in New York City on March 1-2.

The MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week award marks Espinosa’s second this season as he also earned the honor a week ago for his performance at the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships.
