BOSTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's track & field team opened the 2012-2013 indoor season at the UMass Boston Invitational on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College.
Michael McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) led the Bears at the non-scoring meet with a win in the shot put as he broke his own school record in the event with a distance of 53 feet, 9.25 inches. McPherson surpassed his previous standard of 50 feet, 11.50 inches set last season at the ECAC Division III Championships. Stephan Cawley (Dedham, Mass.) added a third place showing (45'5.25") in the shot put. McPherson, who also placed fourth in the weight throw (52'2.50"), qualified for the Division III New England Championships, ECACs, and the Open New England Championships in both events.
The Bears had three members in the finals of the 60-meter dash. Joseph Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) placed second (7.11 seconds) with brother Joshua Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) and Brian Espinosa (Rehoboth, Mass.) finishing fourth (7.19) and seventh (7.27), respectively. All three qualified for the Division III New England Championships. Espinosa also qualified in the 200 with a time of 23.04 seconds and in the long jump with a leap of 6.67 meters.
Bridgewater also placed three in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. Matthew Horan (Billerica, Mass.) finished third with a time of 8.73 seconds and was followed by freshmen Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) in fourth place (8.81) and Daniel Coulter (Norton, Mass.) in seventh (9.09). Horan and Murtagh qualified for the DIII New Englands.
Andrew Sukeforth (Middleboro, Mass.) placed second in the 1,000-meter run and qualified for DIII New Englands with a time of 2:34.79. Joshua Goehring (Haverhill, Mass.) placed fourth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.29. The duo also competed on the Bears' fourth place 4x400 relay team (3:31.81) along with Kevin Sawyer (Woburn, Mass.) and Timothy Judge (East Bridgewater, Mass.).
In upcoming action, the Bears will compete next Saturday at the Harvard Open.
