Six Bears Named to All-MASCAC Baseball Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Six Bridgewater State University student-athletes have been selected to the 2013 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball All-Conference Team.

Senior first baseman David Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior second baseman Sean Riley (Fairhaven, Mass.) garnered first team honors, while senior catcher Keane Costa (Fairhaven, Mass.), senior shortstop Trevor Lawson (Easton, Mass.), senior right fielder Tory Buck (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) and junior pitcher Patrick Martin (Rockland, Mass.) were voted to the second team by the league's coaches.

Pierce and Costa are both making their third straight appearance on the All-MASCAC Baseball Team after being named to the second team in 2011 and first team in 2012.  Riley earned first team honors for the second straight season.

Pierce is batting .384 (48-125) with eight doubles, 12 stolen bases, 34 runs scored and 23 runs batted in.  He ranks second in the MASCAC in runs and hits and fifth in batting.  Pierce is also tied for fourth in stolen bases and tied for fifth in both doubles and RBI. His 31 career doubles ties him with Jim Sullivan (2001-2004) for fifth place in BSU baseball history.

Riley leads the MASCAC in hits, home runs, runs batted in and slugging as he is batting .392 (49-125) with five home runs, nine doubles, two triples, 25 runs scored, 30 RBI and a .616 slugging percentage.  He also ranks fourth in the circuit in both batting average and doubles.  In just two seasons with the Bears, Riley is second all-time in program history with 34 career doubles and 55 extra base hits.

Costa is hitting .305 (25-82) with four doubles, ten runs and 11 RBI in 28 games.  He also has a .389 on base percentage. Costa has appeared in 133 games in four seasons with the Bears including 119 starts behind the plate.

Lawson ranks among the top ten in the MASCAC in batting average, hits, walks, runs batted in and on base percentage.  He is batting .364 (40-110) with five doubles, 25 RBI and 17 walks to go along with a .409 on base percentage.

Buck ranks second in the conference in stolen bases with 14 and is tied for fourth in runs with 28.  He is hitting .352 (38-108) with six doubles, two triples and 14 RBI. Buck's .453 on base percentage is good for sixth among the MASCAC leaders.

Martin is 5-2 with three complete games in eight appearances for the Bears this season, his first in a BSU uniform.  In 49 2/3 innings on the mound, he has fanned 36 batters and recorded an impressive 1.81 earned run average.  Martin is tied for second in the conference in wins and ranks fifth in both ERA and strikeouts.

The BSU baseball team is currently 19-13-1 on the season.  The Bears, who posted an 8-6 mark in conference play, are the fifth seed in this week's MASCAC Tournament and will travel to Worcester State University on Thursday afternoon to take on the fourth-seeded Lancers in opening round play.
