Corey Batista Named MASCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior right-hander Corey Batista has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Batista helped the Bears capture their second straight MASCAC Championship and fifth overall this past week.  The Fall River, Massachusetts native tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout and struck out five in a 1-0 opening round victory over Salem State.

Heading into NCAA Division III Regional Tournament play, Batista is 7-3 on the mound with 66 strikeouts and a 2.95 earned run average in 79 1/3 innings of work.  He has made ten starts this season with nine complete games and opponents are batting just .256 against him.

Batista currently leads the MASCAC in innings pitched, strikeouts, complete games and starts.  He is also tied for third in wins and ranks sixth in ERA and ninth in batting average against.

Batista tied his own school standard for complete games in a season with nine, and equaled Scott Favreau’s (2002-2006) career shutout record with six.  Batista’s mark of 18 career complete games is also a BSU record.

The Bridgewater State baseball team will be making the program's 14th trip to the NCAA Tournament.  Regional brackets will be announced Sunday evening, May 13th or Monday morning, May 14th with regional play getting underway on Wednesday, May 16th.
