BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior right-hander Jim Balboni has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Balboni posted a 1.93 earned run average with 20 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings of work as he went 1-2 on the mound with one complete game in his first three starts of the season.
The Townsend, Massachusetts product allowed two runs on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in a tough 2-1 loss to the Apprentice School in Vero Beach Florida. He then went the distance giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits while striking out eight in a 5-4 win over Elizabethtown College.
On Saturday, in the Bears' home opening twinbill with Southern Maine, Balboni scattered seven hits and gave up just two runs in 8 1/3 innings of work while striking out four in a 2-1 setback to the Huskies.
In 30 appearances over four seasons with the Bears, Balboni is 15-3 with nine complete games and two saves. He has produced a 2.71 earned run average with 88 strikeouts in 146 1/3 innings of work, while opponents are batting just .239 against him.
Balboni currently ranks third all-time at Bridgewater State in ERA as he trails only Paul Uva (2.52) and BSU Hall of Famer Kevin Cadres (1.70) in the baseball record books.
The Bridgewater State baseball team is presently 6-7 on the season. The Bears travel to Brandeis University on Tuesday afternoon (3:00) before returning home to take on Suffolk University on Thursday (3:00).
